Understanding Acceptance Criteria

Acceptance criteria define the minimum standards that concrete must meet to be considered compliant with specifications. These criteria are based on IS 456:2000 and ensure structural safety and durability.

Characteristic Strength

Minimum strength below which only 5% of results may fall

Statistical Evaluation

Mean strength and standard deviation analysis

Compliance Criteria

Specific limits for individual and group test results

Compressive Strength Acceptance (IS 456:2000)

Group Test Results (4 or more samples)

When test results of 4 or more consecutive samples are available, concrete is deemed acceptable if BOTH conditions are satisfied:

Condition 1: Mean Strength

Mean strength ≥ fck + 0.825 × σ

Where σ = Standard Deviation
Condition 2: Individual Strength

Individual strength ≥ fck - 3 MPa

For fck < 20 MPa: ≥ 0.85 fck
Example: M30 Grade
  • fck = 30 MPa
  • Mean strength must be ≥ 30 + (0.825 × σ)
  • Individual sample must be ≥ 27 MPa

Individual Test Results (<4 samples)

When less than 4 consecutive samples are available, each sample must satisfy:

Acceptance Criteria:

Individual strength ≥ fck + 4 MPa

For fck < 20 MPa: ≥ fck + 0.825 × σ
Grade fck (MPa) Min Required (MPa)
M20 20 24
M25 25 29
M30 30 34
M40 40 44
Important Notes
  • Test results are based on 150mm cubes tested at 28 days
  • Standard deviation (σ) is calculated from previous test results (minimum 30 samples)
  • For new producers without historical data, use specified standard deviation values from IS 456:2000 Table 8
  • Average of results from two cubes from the same sample constitutes one test result

Fresh Concrete Acceptance Criteria

Slump
Acceptable Tolerance:

± 25 mm from specified slump OR 1/3 of specified slump, whichever is lower

Examples:
• For 60mm slump: tolerance = ± 20mm (1/3 of 60 = 20mm, lower than 25mm) → Range: 40-80mm
• For 100mm slump: tolerance = ± 25mm (25mm is lower than 1/3 of 100 = 33mm) → Range: 75-125mm
• For 150mm slump: tolerance = ± 25mm (25mm is lower than 1/3 of 150 = 50mm) → Range: 125-175mm
Flow (for SCC)
Acceptable Tolerance:

± 80 mm from specified flow

Example:
• For specified flow of 600mm: acceptable range is 520-680mm
Delivery Time
Maximum Time Limits:
  • From batching to start of discharge:
180 minutes maximum (or as designed)
  • Total time (batching to completion):
    180 minutes maximum
Times may be reduced in hot weather conditions
Temperature
Acceptable Limits:
Normal Concrete:
Maximum 32°C at delivery
Mass Concreting:
Maximum 26°C
Minimum Temperature:
Not less than 5°C

Rejection Criteria

Grounds for Rejection

  • Exceeds delivery time limits
More than 180 minutes from batching (or as designed)
  • Slump outside tolerance
    Beyond specified ± tolerance limits
  • Water addition without authorization
Any unauthorized water added at site
  • Visible segregation or bleeding
    Poor quality fresh concrete
  • Incorrect grade or specification
    Does not match delivery challan
